On Shifting Cybernetic Horizons, JP Enfant takes his strain of nocturnal, mysterious techno in new directions. While the Amsterdam-based producer has always embraced subtlety and intrigue in his productions, on this latest EP he’s purposefully pivoted towards a more muscular sound slicked with a layer of sweat and driven out of his studio with urgency. If Enfant’s sound is usually sleeker, here it’s raw and fierce, painting a vivid picture he describes as more “cyberpunk”.
‘Calnication’ is a sinewy jacker strewn with psychoactive synth phrases folding in on each other, driven by grubby drum machine locomotion and barrelling towards a red-lit intensity. ‘Whatever It Takes’ has its own run of looped-up hypnotism and sonic pin drops as it heads further into the labyrinth, but within all the machinations there’s a sense of movement and fluidity which speaks to the interface between the natural and synthetic worlds.
Providing the inversion to the motorik thrust of the A side, ‘Leave No Trace’ opens up the second half of the EP in a shower of fractured drum science. Taking its cue from jungle’s intricacy without relying on well-worn breaks, Enfant weaves a high-definition tapestry of club-tilted electronica shot through with spatial processing and snaking synth lines. ‘Drowning’ maintains the EP’s introspective balance with an excursion into ambient techno pastures guided by celestial FM voices and looming pads, capturing a sense of future-past romanticism which chimes with the overall mood of the release.
